When reading the novel around 1990, apparently I was impressed by a character's criticism of the supposedly Freudian theory that the Unconscious can be responsible for horrible occurrences like “accidentally” falling asleep at the wheel so that there will be an accident and your passenger will die. If your Unconscious did it, not you, then you are not responsible; but there is still a monster inside you.
