Berne

The old city of Berne was built long before there were cars. Now the people who live there do use cars. What is difficult to convey in a still photograph is that drivers expect to give way to pedestrians. A photograph may show that a café sets out chairs on the same road surface used by cars. One must understand what this means: drivers can be trusted not to zoom past or plow into seated patrons.

Some streets have barriers that lower for authorized vehicles.

Many sidewalks in the old city are arcades.

There are disappearing sidewalks in Berne, as in Ankara.
