MATH 262: Linear Algebra II

Announcements:

VERY IMPORTANT: Sections between 4.7 and 4.13 will not be in Exam 3.
New contents: All of Chapter 3, except Second Partials Test (sec 3.5), Reduction of Quadratic Forms (sec. 3.7) and Orthogonal Similarity (sec. 3.9).
Sections 4.1 to 4.6 (inclusive) from Chapter 4.
Exam 3 Contents: All of Chapter 3, except Second Partials Test (sec 3.5), Reduction of Quadratic Forms (sec. 3.7) and Orthogonal Similarity (sec. 3.9).
All of Chapter 4, except Method of Least Squares (sec. 4.7), Fourier Series (sec. 4.8), Bessel's Inequality, the moreover part of the spectral theorem and Example 4.30 (sec. 4.12).
The usual warning: In Exam 3 there will not be direct questions on the former topics, but you may (and will) need to know the contents of Chapter 1 and 2 to be able to solve the questions.
Exam 3 places are: Acar-Demirkan: M-04, Dogan-Kantar: M-05, Kara-Papak: M-06, Pojon-Zengin: M-07.
Copies of the textbook will be available at Ahmet �nal's office after 26 February 2007.

Grading:

Although a curve based on the distribution of total grades will be consulted; the letter grades will be mainly determined by a system similar to Catalog and this will be done AFTER all the exams are over.

Make-up Exam: There will be a make-up exam after the last exam covering all the topics. The make-up exam may be substituted for only one exam that is missed. (In order to take the make-up exam you must consult one of the instructors.)

Exercises:

Solving exercises (NOT reading the solutions but really solving them) is an essential part of every math course and MATH 262 is no exception. To start studying for the exam the day before is not a good idea, because there is simply no time to work on all the exercises. Also one needs time to digest the course material. The best way to digest abstract concepts is to play with them! Therefore, we recommend you to solve the exercises of a section within the same week that the section is covered in the class. Good luck and have fun!
